9m Sportsboat
The design for this 9m Sports yacht was originally built as ’NFI’. This design was aimed at being fast, simple and economical for amateur construction and the boat was immediately a success. 9m is a perfect size—small enough that the sailing loads are easily managed for round-the-cans-racing, yet big enough to offer reasonable stability for coastal sailing and overnight accommodation.
The hull form is dishy and flat however the beam is not excessive and a great deal of effort has been placed in achieving a hull shape that maintains an even volume distribution when heeled. This makes for a beautifully balanced yacht that can be easily steered even when driven hard. There is sufficient ballast to allow the boat to be sailed singlehanded or in ‘family mode’, a feature that many of the modern sportsboats lack.
The design has been updated slightly with more headroom (1.7m) under the cabin, a slightly loftier deck stepped rig and a lift keel to make it suitable for dry-storage or trailable to regattas (with use of overwidth signs).
Construction is planked in Airex PVC Foam with Biaxial E-glass and Epoxy. The interior is simple and functional for racing with the occasional overnighting capability. The keel and rudder are made from carbon fibre and the lead bulb is available pre-cast. A companionway hatch has been eliminated and entrance to the cabin is via a bulkhead hatch with an overhang (open 60 style) which saves building time and avoids leaks. Additional interior including a basic galley could be added if required, however a big ice-box under the cockpit will suffice for most occasions.
Plans include .dxf cutting files for the building jig, and bulkheads. Construction drawings and notes to assist the amateur builder are also included.
If you are looking for a modern, performance yacht that is easy and cheap to build that will not prove too small after the first season’s sailing then this design is perfect for you!
